Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Fighters Group

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a colorful mix of characters, and a thrilling plot including divine entities, demons, and dark forces expanding in power within the urban setting.

Warning: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season are included.

The Soldiers Table Unveiled

The third episode finished on a major cliffhanger and introduced the initial group of heroes who will separate from the central cast to begin their own adventure, apart from the remaining groups.

This warrior group consists of Teor (brought to life by the voice actor), Thimble (the talented performer), Tyranny (Whitney), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).

The Reason for Division

Given an extensive roster, it was clear from the start that having everyone at a single group would be impossible.

This explains, the opening chapters of the new season serve as an Prelude, connecting the personal journeys before splitting into three smaller tables: Fighters, Schemers, and Explorers.

What Defines the Warrior Group

As described by the DM, the warrior group is for players who prefer a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven story mode where diplomatic options are few and far between.

Initially, figures such as the reluctant priest Wicander might seem mismatched, but the events of the third episode show why these particular heroes are perfectly fit for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

First, the party has a clear idea where to go next after a violent initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose death initiated the campaign’s events—used The Crow Keepers for his own means, invading the secret base, striking the rogue, and stealing all the powerful objects to sell off.

The traitor then settled his obligations and escaped to a fortified location in the remote area, beyond the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each adventurer has a personal reason to leave the city the metropolitan area:

  • Thimble, as the companion and closest confidant, wants revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in Timmony and warns that it is a dangerous environment.
  • The warrior and The healer, having defied his house’s orders to execute Teor and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their position as important members in House Halovar could help the team reach places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Furthermore, The grateful character swore a life debt to The savior for his salvation and will now accompany him wherever.

Fugitives

In addition, all of them are hunted by the powers that govern Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind no longer safe:

  • The rogue and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and The cleric defied the powerful family and the army of fiends they are allied with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This results in them few options but to head to the northern region in search of the traitor.

Future Episodes

From episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the warrior group will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight players to form the Explorers and Planners parties.

Fans can look forward to learning which players will be where in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, available to watch on next week.
