The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG Ever
The speculation around this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely designing a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
