This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a profound meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when the couple transition from the big city to the rural area for her career. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters face the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
