People who endured abuse by church officials have voiced renewed hope after their first meeting with the new Pope at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, heading the anti-abuse organization, stated that the pontiff's decision to meet with them so soon in his papacy spoke volumes about his dedication to addressing the problem.

Worldwide Zero-Tolerance Approach Pushed

The group is pushing for a worldwide strict approach that would defrock any priest who admits to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a child. This approach has been implemented in the US.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "opposition in certain regions of the world" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we acknowledged that there is pushback," they stated.

Inherited Challenge

The current pontiff, who took the position in May, has taken on this persistent issue that has haunted the Church for many years.

Earlier attempts to address the situation included an unprecedented summit on paedophilia within the institution and revisions to church laws to clearly outlaw sexual abuse.

Personal Link

For the representative, who prefers they/them pronouns, the drive for global implementation of the measure is deeply meaningful. The Canadian advocate revealed they were abused by a clergy member who was subsequently moved between various churches.

"Hopefully this will establish the direction for his papacy, because we aim to work with him," they stated. "We have the same goal, we seek to eliminate clergy abuse."

Significant Encounter

Seven representatives of the organization, which represents survivors and advocates from over thirty nations, met with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The discussion, originally scheduled for a brief period, lasted to a full hour, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The Pope was described as "quite empathetic" when hearing the account of a woman abused at a church-run institution for Indigenous children in Canada.

Hickey noted the Pope was "compassionate" about their own experience and seemed "modest, funny, and approachable."

"Victims have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was making empty promises," they commented. "I believed like he was sincere, realistic, and receptive and keen to work with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The group is advocating that revisions to canon law will facilitate the adoption of the strict approach globally.

They have consulted specialists and compiled documents that they plan to submit to the pontiff.

"He seemed engaged in looking at it," they remarked.

Accountability Emphasized

A recently released church-ordered report emphasized the "necessity of a efficient process for the stepping down and/or dismissal of religious officials or staff in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The document also pointed out that victims repeatedly stressed the "critical requirement for bishops and major superiors to be made responsible for negligence and cover-up."

Moving Forward

Hickey revealed they informed the pontiff at the beginning of their meeting: "This represents as much a risk for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

After the encounter, Hickey voiced optimism for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the conclusion, coming together and establishing a relationship and continuing to strengthen that relationship is a step in the correct path," they commented.

Hickey added that they told with the pontiff: "Just because it's a difficult period, I believe like we can change how the narrative concludes - he valued that."
